Canada: Fire brought under control in Alberta following a gas pipeline rupture

A forest fire in Alberta, caused by a gas pipeline rupture, has been brought under control without posing a threat to neighbouring communities.

A fire caused on Tuesday by a ruptured gas pipeline was brought under control in Alberta. The fire, which broke out in the county of Yellowhead, has burnt 10 hectares. It broke out near Edson, around 40 kilometres to the north-west. Caroline Charbonneau from the Ministry of Parks and Forests points out that there was no significant fire activity on Wednesday morning. However, the authorities must carry out further checks before declaring the fire completely extinguished.

Monitoring and rapid response

The authorities have yet to locate and neutralise the hotspots beneath the surface. This process could take several days. Meanwhile, the investigation into the exact causes of the gas pipeline rupture could drag on for months, or even years. The Canadian Energy Regulatory Board has sent inspectors to the site. They are monitoring the response by TC Energy, the pipeline’s owner and operator.

Details of the incident reveal that the damaged gas pipeline forms part of the NGTL network. This network, which is vital for the transport of natural gas in Alberta and beyond, stretches over 24,000 kilometres. Technicians quickly isolated the affected section following the incident, thereby stopping any gas leak.

Background and security measures

TC Énergie, which faced a similar incident in 2022, had its infrastructure assessed by the TSB. The investigation attributed the rupture to external corrosion of the pipe walls. Despite these incidents, the Canadian pipeline network has a fairly positive safety record. Furthermore, in 2022, the number of accidents or incidents was below the average for the last ten years, indicating continuous improvements in pipeline safety.
