A night-time fire near Le Mans destroyed between 4,000 and 7,000 square metres of woodland in Changed, in the department of Sarthe, during the night of 23–24 April 2024. According to the latest reports, there have been no casualties.
The incident took place during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday; the authorities raised the alarm at around 11.40 pm and the fire brigade quickly arrived at the scene. They deployed five fire engines to tackle the blaze. These vehicles were dispatched from the fire stations in Changé, Le Mans Sud, Yvré-l’Évêque and Parigné-l’Évêque.
Firefighters are still at the scene
Thanks to the efforts of the firefighters, the fire was brought under control during the morning. Despite the initial intensity of the flames, the teams’ swift and effective work prevented more extensive damage. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. However, the firefighters remained at the scene to secure the area and prevent the fire from reigniting.
Yves-Marie Hervé, the mayor of Changé, told “France Ouest”: “Initially, we thought that 7,000 m² of forest had been destroyed. However, at daybreak, it appears that the affected area is more likely to be 4,000 m²."
Precautions have been taken and an investigation is under way
No evacuation was necessary, but the authorities remain vigilant. An investigation is under way to determine the cause of the fire. Local residents are advised to avoid the affected area. They should follow the authorities’ instructions to ensure their safety and to facilitate the clean-up and safety operations.
