Emergency situation on site
A major fire broke out on Tuesday 27 May 2025 at the Les Sables d’Or campsite, located in Cap d’Agde, in the Hérault department. The fire led to the evacuation of nearly 500 people, mainly tourists staying at the site. According to initial reports, two people suffered minor injuries from smoke inhalation and were taken to Sète General Hospital.
Deployment of emergency services
To bring the fire under control, the Hérault fire brigade set up a command post at the scene. Around 90 firefighters were mobilised to tackle the blaze, which destroyed around twenty mobile homes. Explosions were heard, and thick black smoke was visible for several kilometres around.
Evacuation and rehousing
The town of Agde has activated an emergency plan to rehouse the evacuated residents. The local authorities are working in coordination with the emergency services to ensure people’s safety and minimise the risk of the fire spreading .
Investigation underway
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage. An investigation is under way to determine the cause of the fire. The local authorities are urging caution and asking residents and visitors to follow the safety instructions issued by the emergency services.
