The fire was reported at 1.57 pm in the town of Fabrègues. Within a few minutes, fuelled by winds of 65 km/h, the fire spread rapidly through the Gardiole mountain range. From the very outset, 200 firefighters, supported by three Canadair aircraft, were deployed in an attempt to contain the blaze. Despite a temporary lull, the situation rapidly deteriorated as the wind began to swirl.
The fire brigade had to operate in particularly difficult conditions: intense heat, dry air and gusts of wind, making it difficult to bring the fire under control. At 6 pm, the fire was still burning and had already spread across nearly 100 hectares. No buildings were affected, but vigilance remains at its highest in the area.
A9 motorway blocked and evacuations in Mireval
The A9 motorway was completely paralysed by the smoke, forcing Vinci to close the motorway to traffic in both directions. Hundreds of motorists were stranded for several hours in the sun, some near the Fabrègues service area, others between Lunel, Sète and Narbonne. The constant stream of water-bombing aircraft flying over the motorway left a lasting impression.
In Mireval, a small village near the fire, the anxiety was palpable. The flames gradually spread towards the village, forcing the authorities to organise evacuations to sports halls. The residents, their eyes fixed on the hills, watched the fire’s progress with dread.
A large-scale campaign is still under way
Firefighting operations are currently underway. Three Dash aircraft, three Canadairs and a Puma helicopter from the HBE are deployed, supported by 200 firefighters and 60 vehicles. The aim is to contain the fire before nightfall. The authorities are urging caution and advising people to avoid the area.
