This morning at around 10.50 am, a fire broke out near the A552 motorway, in the town of Pennes-Mirabeau, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. According to Provence, the fire is believed to have started in a vehicle and quickly spread to the surrounding vegetation. Fanned by a strong mistral wind, the blaze is spreading towards Marseille, threatening the city’s northern districts.

In the space of a few hours, nearly 150 hectares have been ravaged. The sense of unease is palpable as the flames draw closer to residential areas.
Homes under threat, evacuations underway
Evacuations have been ordered in the neighbourhoods of Jas de Rhodes, Thor and Bouroumettes. A care home situated in the immediate vicinity of the fire is also causing great concern. Residents have received an FR-Alert notification on their mobile phones, urging them to strictly follow the safety instructions: stay indoors, close doors and shutters, do not travel by road, and ensure easy access for the emergency services.
Firefighters from SDIS 13, supported by the Marseille maritime fire brigade, were quickly reinforced by an impressive aerial operation: 5 Canadair aircraft, 2 Dash aircraft, a Puma helicopter and several light water-bombing aircraft. Despite these resources, the rapid spread of the fire is making operations difficult.
Traffic at a standstill
The situation is also having a major impact on infrastructure. The A55 motorway has been completely closed between the A7 and the entrance to Marseille, causing massive traffic jams at the northern entrance to the city. Furthermore, Marseille-Provence Airport has suspended several flights.
