Late on Sunday 27 July, the fire brigade fromAubagne (Bouches-du-Rhône) were urgently called out to contain a fire that had just broken out in a densely populated residential area, near Jean-Moulin Park. On arrival, the flames had already spread to the surrounding undergrowth. According to Provence, the case in question: a local resident who had started burning paper directly in his garden, even though the department was under a Red alert due to a very high risk of forest fires.
“The mistral was blowing hard, and the fire brigade had already been called out to several fires in less than an hour,” said an indignant Vincent Rusconi, deputy mayor responsible for security. “And yet, he thought it was a good idea to start a fire. It’s completely reckless,” according to comments reported by La Provence.
The fire was brought under control in time; a complaint has been lodged
The fire brigade’s swift response enabled them to contain the fire before it spread any further. No one was injured. But the matter does not end there: a report has been drawn up for failure to comply with the prefectural order prohibiting the use of fire during periods of high risk. The resident will be summoned to Aubagne police station in the coming days.
A police source has confirmed that legal proceedings are under way for causing bodily harm through negligence. These proceedings demonstrate the authorities’ determination to take a firm stance against this type of behaviour.
