Two separate fires broke out late yesterday in southern Ardèche: one in the town of Les Vans and one in Malbosc.

So far, approximately 36 hectares have been burned, including 11 hectares in Les Vans and 25 hectares in Malbosc.

Twenty-five people were evacuated; they included residents of a hamlet and some of the tourists staying at a campground in the area; these individuals were able to find shelter with relatives and at the Malbosc community center.

An aerial reconnaissance mission took place this morning.

Among the resources deployed since yesterday: 220 firefighters and forest firefighters, about 50 ground vehicles, 2 Dash aircraft, 8 Canadair aircraft, and 3 helicopters. Members of the Ardèche Gendarmerie Unit have also been mobilized to secure the area and facilitate the firefighters’ work.

Françoise Piterboth, sub-prefect of Largentière, is on site. All government agencies are mobilized to bring these fires under control.

The Prefect of the Ardèche is once again urging everyone to remain vigilant. It is essential to avoid risky behavior to prevent fires from starting, in particular: never throw cigarette butts into the countryside or out the window of your vehicle; never have barbecues in high-risk areas. The use of fireworks and pyrotechnic devices is prohibited.

The enhanced restrictions, set forth in the “Use of Fire” decree, remain in effect until September 30.
