the fire is no longer spreading

The wildfire that broke out on September 4 around 4:00 p.m. in the town of Puilaurens is still burning. Despite more favorable conditions overnight, the fire has not been contained.

According to this morning’s estimates, the fire has now burned an area of 225 hectares.

350 firefighters—from the Aude department and other departments that have come to provide reinforcements—and 100 vehicles are on site.

Aerial resources have been deployed: a DASH aircraft and a heavy water-bombing helicopter.

A helicopter-based response team operated throughout the night in areas difficult for ground resources to access and will continue its efforts today.

Residents of the hamlet of Lavagnac will be able to return to their homes.

The RD117 remains closed to traffic from the Ours de Quillan roundabout to the hamlet of La Pradelle.

Today’s weather conditions, with extremely high temperatures, are rather unfavorable.

The Prefect of Aude urges the utmost caution:

• avoid the area to facilitate rescue operations;
• follow the instructions of the firefighters and police officers on site;
• do not overload emergency lines unnecessarily;
• stay informed through official sources and do not spread false information.

The wildfire that broke out this Friday, September 4, around 4:00 p.m. in the town of Puilaurens burned through 150 hectares of vegetation.

A total of 32 people from the hamlet of Lavagnac were evacuated, as were residents of Puilaurens Castle, as a precaution.

Departmental Road D117 remains closed to traffic from the Ours roundabout to the hamlet of La Pradelle.

The aircraft deployed (7 Canadairs, 2 Dash planes, and 1 Morane 11 helicopter) carried out 58 water drops before ceasing operations at nightfall.

The fire remains active but is spreading slowly. Weather conditions are expected to be more favorable overnight, with higher humidity and lower temperatures.

Early tomorrow morning, an aerial reconnaissance mission will be conducted to assess the needs for the next phase of operations.
