At around 1 am, despite the efforts of the fire brigade, the fire broke through the containment line set up in an attempt to slow its spread. Faced with the intensity of the flames and their advance towards the Arcachon Basin, the decision was taken to gradually evacuate the entire peninsula, from Claouey to the tip of Cap-Ferret.
Final phase of the evacuation
The Prefect of Gironde, Sophie Brocas, has ordered the third and final phase of the evacuation. Anyone still in the area must leave immediately via the RD106 towards Bordeaux.
Ferry services are also available between 7 o’clock and 10 o’clock, departing from the piers at:
- Grand Piquey;
- The Canon;
- Port de la Vigne;
- Bélisaire.
These shuttle buses are intended, in particular, for people who do not have their own means of transport.
The villages of Lège and Le Porge were also evacuated during the night. These operations, carried out with the support of the National Gendarmerie, proceeded peacefully.
Severe traffic jams on the RD106
Traffic conditions on the RD106 are reported to be particularly difficult, with heavy congestion. There are also a large number of emergency vehicles on this road.
Motorists should remain calm, allow emergency services to get through and follow the authorities’ instructions at all times. Please do not travel to the affected areas so as not to hinder operations.
The reception centre set up by Bordeaux Métropole at the Bordeaux Exhibition Centre has increased its capacity to accommodate evacuees who wish to go there.
New reinforcements expected
In view of the changing situation, the rescue operations command centre, which had previously been based in Le Porge, has been moved to Lège.
Significant ground resources remain deployed. Further reinforcements, both on the ground and in the air, are expected in the coming hours to continue the fire-fighting efforts.
In addition, increased surveillance of homes is being carried out in the evacuated areas to prevent acts of vandalism.
