25 July 2026: the world premiere in Lacanau
The summer of 2026 will be remembered as the summer when a military transport aircraft was deployed to help fight forest fires. Since Wednesday 22 July, a fierce fire has been spreading through the mountains of Lacanau, in Gironde, fanned by winds blowing towards the Bordeaux metropolitan area ; the authorities are carrying out large-scale precautionary evacuations — around 140,000 people affected in seven local authorities – an initiative on an exceptional scale.
Faced with a wave that threatens to overwhelm the water-lifting wheels at Canadair and Dash, the government is calling on the armed forces to take action without delay the A400M fitted with the water-bombing kit, for which the trial programme had just been officially approved. On Saturday 25 July, the Atlas carried out its first operational sortie: 20 tonnes of fire-retardant material, recognisable by their red colour, deposited along the edge of the fire to slow its spread — the equivalent of three Canadair drops, in a single pass.
The aircraft is engaged in supplement of the conventional system — amphibious conveyor belts, Milan delay barriers, water-bombing helicopters, ground-based columns — and not in their place: its role is to deliver an unrivalled volume of firepower to the most critical fronts, whilst specialised assets handle precision strikes.
From idea to fire: four years of trials
The A400M Atlas is, first and foremost, the workhorse of European armed forces: a four-engine tactical transport aircraft capable of carrying 37 tonnes, landing on rudimentary airstrips and flying fast and far. As early as 2022, Airbus Defence and Space developed a removable drop kit to provide client states with additional fire-fighting capacity, which has been tested during trial campaigns in Spain.

How a military cargo aircraft drops 20 tonnes
One kit, no modifications
The system is a removable tank fitted in the cargo hold, secured in the same way as a standard freight pallet. No structural modifications to the aircraft are required: any A400M in the fleet can be fitted with within a few hours, and then returned to his transport duties.
Rear ramp unloading
The airdrop takes place by gravity, with the cargo ramp open, in about ten seconds. The aeroplane is then flying at very low altitude (around 50 metres) and at reduced speed — the tactical flight envelope that military crews already operate within.
This ‘roll-on/roll-off’ philosophy is the concept’s great strength: no dedicated fleet to finance, no aircraft left grounded all year round. In return, the Atlas cannot be fined : each flight calls at an airport equipped to refuel with water or fire retardant, which lengthens the cycle compared with a Canadair operating from a nearby body of water.

Experimentation: the questions that remain unanswered
A single successful drop does not constitute a doctrine. The 2026 trial will need to resolve several issues before the scheme can be made permanent :
- Efficiency on the ground : Is the 20-tonne oil slick concentrated and localised enough to justify a longer rotation ? Feedback from the Gironde will be crucial.
- Actual availability : How many kits, how many crews trained in airdrops, and what is the notice period for mobilisation during the peak fire season ?
- The cost of employment the cost per litre of fuel consumed by a four-engine military aircraft, compared with the cost of hiring additional specialised aircraft.
- The joint with the Civil Protection channel: frequencies, coordination by the King Air, integration into conveyor systems without compromising their throughput.
One thing is already clear: as the seasons grow longer and stretch out — the figures show this —, France is exploring every possible avenue to scale up its aerial response. The Lacanau Atlas is the most spectacular example of this.
